A 32-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her parents’ residence in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Friday evening. The victim, identified as Varsha Rani, was undergoing a troubled second marriage and was under depression, the police said. An FIR was lodged under Sections 498A and 306 of the IPC at Geeta Colony police station on Saturday morning. No suicide note was found from the spot, the police said.
According to a police official handling the case, deceased Varsha was allegedly being mentally and physically harassed by her husband Akhilesh Agarwal, who was out of work for the past seven months and forced her to pay for the house rent and all the household expenses, including her seven-year-old son’s school fees.
Varsha’s brother-in-law Keshul said, “Varsha was being mentally and physically tortured by Akhilesh after they got married in 2013 and used to demand that she spend all her salary on paying the house rent and day-to-day expenses, while he only had responsibility towards his parents. He also beat her up and refused to keep her son, from her first marriage, with her.”
“On Friday, around 3.30 pm when her parents had gone out in the neighbourhood to attend a prayer service, Varsha locked her room and committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan with her dupatta.” The police was informed at around 4 pm by the victim’s father.
Varsha’s body was taken for a post-mortem at Sabzi Mandi mortuary on Friday afternoon, the police said. The police has arrested the deceased’s husband Akhilesh.
While Varsha was working as a steno-clerk in Tees Hazari court, Akhilesh was a practitioner of naturopathy and had been unemployed for the last seven months. Seeing her regular source of income, he was forcing her to give all her money for all their expenses, the police said.
