A 23-year-old medical student was arrested on Saturday for allegedly abetting the suicide of his 20-year-old live-in partner, also a medical student, in Katraj on June 17.
The deceased, Harshita Tripathi, was a third year student of MBBS at a private college in Katraj. Police have identified the arrested as Nimit Narendra Garg, a resident of Wonder City in Katraj. A Magistrate Court on Saturday remanded Garg to police custody till July 28.
Initially, police had registered a case of accidental death. Later, Harshita's father Vinaymohan Tripathi (53), a resident of Delhi, had filed a complaint with Bharati Vidyapeeth police station. Accordingly, police had registered an FIR under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on July 9. However, police arrested Garg only after the girl's parents protested on Saturday.
According to cops, Harshita hailed from Delhi and was studying here since the last three years. Garg and Harshita were friends and had recently started living together at his flat. Initially, all was well, but for the last few days, there used to be frequent quarrels between them. On the night of June 16, they quarrelled again, Disturbed, Harshita called her friends and told them about it. Around 1.30 am on July 17, Garg was out with friends when Harshita jumped from the balcony, after locking the flat from inside. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. A post mortem report stated that she had consumed alcohol prior to her suicide, police said.
