KOLKATA: The city received heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning, but a pleasant weather will allow the citizens to get soaked in the colours of Holi. The Met office has predicted a fair weather from Thursday. In fact, the weekend will have the temperature sliding below the normal mark.
Triggered by a low pressure trough that extended from Uttar Pradesh to Chhattisgarh, Wednesday morning's thundershower brought a relief to Kolkatans who has already started feeling the summer heat. Thanks to the rain, this system has weakened and the impact will be felt over the next few days.
Since Tuesday night, Alipore and Dum Dum recorded 17.6 mm and 10 mm rain, respectively. According to Debnath, the thundershower had nothing to do with the western disturbance that triggered rain in Delhi and snowfall Jammu and Kashmir.
"The low pressure trough has weakened and it is moving away from this region. So we do not expect any rain in next few days. But both minimum and maximum temperatures will remain below the normal mark in the next few days. The weather will remain pleasant on Holi,"
said GC Debnath, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre.
A clear sky and a day temperature of around 30 degree Celsius on Thursday and Friday is going to be bonus for Holi revellers, especially those who have plans of outdoor celebration.
The minimum temperature in the next few days is expected to sway between 17 and 19 degree Celsius while the maximum temperature will be between 30 to 32 degree Celsius. On Wednesday, these two parameters stuck to the normal mark — at 20.4 degree and 32.1 degree Celsius, respectively.
"The heat had already started bothering. The rain has brought a huge relief. I wish such showers keep intervening to arrest the rise in mercury," said Suma Debnath, a resident of Southern Avenue.
"I would be attending an event organized at an outdoor location. I was a little apprehensive about the heat. Now it seems I can go out and enjoy smearing colours with friends and family," said Aditi Agarwal, an entrepreneur from Lake Town.
