Agarwaltimes - Girl’s kidneys save 2 lives after her death

Fourteen-year-old Radha Rani may have died at a very young age but she has saved two lives and possibly a third before leaving this world. Two persons have received her kidneys while her liver will be used by another person very soon.

It was a historic day at Rajasthan’s premier Sawai Man Singh Hospital where doctors successfully performed a cadaver transplant on a 50-year-old woman named Shakuntala and 47-year-old man named Brij Kishore. It was made possible by Radha Rani’s father Purushottam, who readily agreed to donate her daughter’s organs. What’s more, Radha Rani’s liver was also flown to Delhi in an Air Force plane which may be used in a patient.

Radha Rani, who belonged to Sawai Madhopur, was admitted to the hospital after she had met with an accident recently. She couldn’t be saved and was declared “brain dead”, a situation in which a person’s brain stops working but other internal body parts including kidneys and liver can be transplanted within a set period of time. She was brought to the SMS Hospital on February 22 and her body was taken into the urology operation theatre on February 24 after which her kidneys and liver were removed and preserved.

However, only one kidney was required for ailing Brij Kishore but doctors contacted the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital from where they came to know that luckily a patient Shakuntala also required kidney. She was then brought to the SMS Hospital and both the operations were successfully performed. Doctors have said that both the patients are doing fine and will soon be discharged.

Dr Christopher Berry, who is a cadaver transplant specialist from the US, and also guides the functioning of cadaver wing, led the team of several surgeons, anesthetists and nephrologists. The other doctors involved in transplant were Dr. Vinay Tomar, Dr. SS Yadav, Dr. Shivam Priyadarshi, Dr. Neeraj Agarwal, Sr. Varsha Kothari, Dr. Trishla Jain, Dr. Chitra, Dr. Vinay Malhotra and Dr. Pankaj Beniwal.

This is the first cadaver transplant in the state in a public medical facility.
